How to Make Coleus Look Like a Tree

Coleus plants are ornamental shade plants that produce brightly colored leaves in a wide variety of patterns. The plant is a hardy grower in both indoor and outdoor situations. Though it naturally tends toward a shrub-like appearance, it can also be pruned to resemble a small tree. Start with a coleus plant with a strong central stem.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean a sharp knife thoroughly using soap and water.

    • 2

Cut all of the side shoots from the coleus plant. Remove all of the side shoots up to the point where you want the "trunk" of the tree to end and the foliage to begin.

    • 3

Push a garden stake or dowel 4 to 5 inches into the ground next to the coleus. The stake should be tall enough to sink into the ground while still being as tall as the trunk itself.

    • 4

Cut two fabric rectangles that are 8 inches long and 1 inch wide.

    • 5

Tie the coleus's trunk to the garden stake using the ties. Use one at the middle of the trunk and one close to the top, where the foliage starts.

    • 6

Trim the side shoots as they appear using a sharp, clean knife.
