Cut away any brown grass stems during the early spring. This foliage has died off over the winter and will only suffocate the newer growth throughout the growing season.

Divide the blue fescue every other year by digging it up with a shovel and dividing the root ball into several sections. Each section can then be planted to thrive as an individual plant. If the center of the cluster is brown and dead, remove it and throw it away.
Cut the fescue grass blades down to a height of three inches in the spring if you have noticed that the plant is looking ragged. This encourages fresh new growth.
Remove any stray brown grass blades that you see throughout the growing season.
