Oiling Terra-Cotta Planters

Many people choose terra-cotta planters, both indoors and outside, due to the many benefits that they offer. This centuries-old material is relatively inexpensive, comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and easily absorbs excess moisture that can be detrimental to plant roots. Before transferring your greenery into a terra-cotta pot, however, use linseed oil to moisturize and preserve the clay and extend the pot's life.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the terra-cotta planter inside and out with a damp rag to remove dirt, dust and debris. Allow the pot to air dry until it's no longer moist.

    • 2

Apply a generous amount of the boiled linseed oil to a dry cloth rag and gently rub it into the planter. Treat the inside and outside of the planter or pot.

    • 3

Allow the planter to sit overnight so the linseed oil can soak into the clay and form a protective coating. Linseed oil helps the planter retain its moisture, prevents the cracking and drying that is common with terra-cotta. It also intensifies the color of the clay.

Use a dry cloth to absorb any excess linseed oil from the terra-cotta. Use the rag in a circular, buffing motion to create a smooth finish on the planter.
