• Gorilla hair mulch is made from the fibrous bark of redwood trees. The bark is shredded mechanically and the result is a fibrous, tufted mulch that is used to surround plants and flowers and provide ground cover, just as other types of mulch. Gorilla hair mulch is reddish brown with a fine texture, much like thick fur. When spread along the ground, it provides a fluffier, piled look compared to other mulch options.

Advantages

• The thick density of gorilla hair mulch makes it an excellent deterrent for weeds to grow. The gorilla hair mulch allows water through to the roots of surrounding plants and flowers without letting it evaporate too quickly. This mulch is also useful for warming roots in winter and keeping the ground cooler in summer. Like all mulches, gorilla hair mulch protects the plant roots and preserves topsoil from erosion. The texture of gorilla hair mulch makes an aesthetically pleasing flower bed cover that is different than more traditional forms of mulch, like chips. Because of its texture, gorilla hair mulch doesn't compact as quickly as some other types of mulch. Gorilla hair mulch is also economical and plentiful.

Disadvantages

• Like most organic mulches, gorilla hair mulch is slow to decompose and therefore may suppress the growth of bacteria in the soil that produce nitrogen, a key component to healthy plants. Supplementing the soil with a liquid fertilizer can re-establish the balance. Some bark mulches, like gorilla hair mulch, may be toxic to plants if the wood has been treated, or treated improperly.

Application

• To use gorilla hair mulch in flower beds, first clear the area of all weeds and trim any shrubs and plants. Rake the exposed soil smooth and clear out any leaves or other debris. Cover the soil completely with a mesh weed barrier. Spread the gorilla hair mulch over the weed barrier to 2 inches thick. Don't spread the gorilla hair mulch too thick or it can prevent the plants from growing properly. Break up clumps with your hands and spread them evenly. Water the gorilla hair mulch and surrounding plants immediately to get the mulch to settle.
