How to Seal Planters on the Side of a Building

Outdoor planters can add aesthetic beauty and interest to a home landscape. When you place planters alongside a structure, consider issues involved with the surface of the planter sitting against the surface of the building. To prevent problems, seal planters on the side of a building. The sealant will prevent moisture from absorbing through the planter materials and insects from damaging the siding of the building.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the water-repellent sealant in a thin and even layer over the outer surface of each planter using the 4-inch paintbrush. Coat the entire wood surface thoroughly. Allow the sealant to dry completely, according to manufacturer recommendations.

    • 2

Apply a second coat of sealant after the first coat dries. Allow the second coat to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Cut plastic sheeting to fit the inside surface of each planter. Fit the sheeting inside the planters to cover the bottom surface. Pull the sheeting up along the sides of the planter and fold it neatly to create a thin barrier over the inside of the planter. Staple the sheeting to the inside of the planter along the top edge of the planter to hold it securely.

Cut holes in the plastic sheeting at the points of the drainage holes in the planters to facilitate effective draining.
