California Ornamental Grasses

The arid California climate is the perfect setting for growing ornamental grasses, which require little water or maintenance. Ranging in color from subtle blues to red and green, some grasses grow in small spaces around rocks while others require larger lots for growing success.

  1. Considerations

    • Ornamental grasses grow in a variety of sizes; consider how large your lot is when choosing a species. Clustered field sedge and Canyon Prince are two varieties that can grow as tall as 8 feet while others will remain very small.

    Features

    • Some species work well placed in full sun in containers with well draining soil. Dwarf mondo grows to only about 2 inches high and is an excellent choice for containers. Other varieties can grow wild and may need to be cut back, while some grow slowly and will not spread aggressively if left alone.

    Landscaping Options

    • Certain varieties of ornamental grasses are used in place of lawn and take minimal water. These grasses will prevent erosion and stabilize ground, working well in sloping areas. As an alternative to a front lawn, these grasses are offered in a variety of foliage colors including red and silver, bright green, subtle blues and striped species. Additionally, many grasses grow very lush and will rustle in the wind, adding texture to a garden space.
