How to Install Cobble Circle Pavers with Fire Pit

You can install cobble pavers in your outdoor space to create a circular patio with a fire pit feature in the center. A patio surrounding a fire pit will create an ideal space for entertaining. The key to laying a patio and fire pit is preparing the foundation. The pavers and fire pit blocks are laid dry and require a sturdy and level base. Instructions

    • 1

Place the metal fire pit ring in the center of the area that you have selected for the fire pit and cobble circle paver patio. Drive a stake into the ground in the center of the ring approximately 12 inches deep with a mallet.

    • 2

Tie the end of the garden twine to the top of the stake. Unroll it as you pull it out from the center to the diameter that you want for the patio. Add 12 inches to the desired diameter for a gravel border. Cut the twine off with shears.

    • 3

Hold onto the twine and pull it tight. Grasp a spray can of landscaping spray paint in the same hand. Keep the twine tight and spray as you walk in a complete circle to spray the outer line of the patio onto the ground. Pull out the stake from the center and set it aside along with the twine.

    • 4

Set the metal fire pit ring aside. Dig out the entire inside of the painted outline with a shovel to a depth of 8 inches.

    • 5

Fill the first 6 inches of the dug out area with gravel. Tamp the gravel down with a tamper. Move the tamper up and down in an even motion across the entire surface of the gravel.

    • 6

Add a one-quarter- to one-half-inch layer of sand over the gravel. This will help you level the paver blocks. Place the metal fire pit ring in the center of the dug out patio area.

    • 7

Lay the first layer of fire pit paver blocks end to end around the perimeter of the metal fire pit ring. Stack a second layer of paver blocks over the first layer. Stagger the joints so that they will form strong layers. Continue in this manner until you have reached the top of the metal fire pit ring.

    • 8

Place the circle cobble paver blocks end to end around the fire pit paver blocks in a circular row. Leave a one-quarter-inch space between the fire pit and the inside edge of the first layer of circle cobble paver blocks. This will later be filled with sand. Continue laying circular rows until you reach approximately 12 inches from the outside edge. Evenly space the pavers in each row as you lay them. Place a level across each block as you lay it and tap it with a mallet to adjust it for level.

    • 9

Dump a pile of sand on the patio surface. Sweep the sand into the spaces between the pavers with a shop broom. Sweep the excess sand off from the patio surface.

    • 10

Wrap landscape edging around the outside edge of the cobble circle paver blocks. Cut off the excess with shears. Hammer the spikes included with the edging into the holes in the landscape edging every eight to 12 inches along the edging.

    • 11

Fill in the space between the edging and the remaining dug out area with gravel. This will conceal the landscape edging and add a decorative border around the fire pit patio.
