How to Build a Sandstone Patio

Sandstone is a layer of rock found in another common type of building stone called flagstone. Constructing a sandstone patio is a great do-it-yourself project that has several advantages, including the possibility of saving hundreds or thousands over the cost of hiring someone to do it for you, as well as the satisfaction that comes with building something yourself. Building a sandstone patio is fairly challenging but the rewards can be worth it.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local utility provider and ask them to come to your house and alert you to any underground wires that you need to be aware of. This will help ensure that you are clear to build in your desired area and is important for your safety and those who may be helping you with the project.

    • 2

Measure out the desired dimensions of your patio. Use wooden stakes to mark the borders and tie a string around so you have a clear picture of where the edges are.

    • 3

Excavate a 6-inch deep layer of soil in the area you want to build your sandstone patio. Save any sod for areas of your yard that may need patching.

    • 4

Insert the flexible edging around the entire outer border of your hole. Tap the edging into place with the rubber mallet. This edge will help the stones from moving around and sliding in the future.

    • 5

Compact the soil thoroughly using a plate compactor, which you can rent from a home improvement store for around $75.

    • 6

Put landscaping fabric on top of the soil to make sure weeds do not grow up through your sandstones.

    • 7

Place a layer of gravel on top of the landscaping fabric that is around 2 inches deep. Use a rake to level out the gravel until there is a smooth, even surface to work from.

    • 8

Use the plate compactor to pack down the gravel. Lay a 2 x 4 on top of the gravel and put a level on top. You want the gravel to go very slightly away from any building structures (such as your house) so there is a proper drainage system with no potential for water damage to your home.

    • 9

Pour a 4-inch layer of sand on top of the gravel and level it out until it's even.

    • 10

Lay down your sandstones and wiggle them into place until they're secure and level. Allow a small amount of space between each of the stones, no more than an inch for loose stones and no more than 1/8-inch for pavers.

    • 11

Spread sand into the spaces between the stones and compact the stones with a plate compactor one last time. Rinse the surface and cracks with water.
