Faux Finish Tutorial

Creating a faux finish can save you time, expense and resources over installing the actual surface, such as a leather wall. Here, we'll focus on creating the same look as a leather surface using only paint, glaze and a few tools such as cotton rags.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint
  • Water or glaze
  • Paint roller
  • Painter's tape

Instructions

    • 1

Tape along the edges of the ceiling, baseboard, electrical outlets and any other areas on which you don't want to paint.

    • 2

Paint two to three coats of the base color. This color should be a few shades lighter than the top glaze paint's color. Use paint rollers for the quickest application, relying on brushes for edging. Allow paint to dry between each coat.

    • 3

Mix one part paint to four parts painting glaze or water in an empty paint can. To start, you'll only work on 2-foot sections of wall at a time.

While the glaze is still wet, gently roll rags across the wall's surface. Doing so will remove excess paint, allowing the undercoat of paint to show through and creating a textured, leather look. Move onto the next 2-foot section and repeat these steps. Allow this coat to dry for 24 hours and apply a shellac coat, if water protection is needed.
