How to Use Weed Block

Weed block, also called landscape fabric, deters the weeds that choke your landscaping and garden paths. In addition to blocking weeds, quality weed block allows the passage of air and moisture--elements required to keep the underlying soil healthy. With just basic tools and materials you can lay weed block that will not only save you hours of tedious weeding, but also help to keep your yard herbicide free.

Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate the area’s soil using a garden hoe. Plunge the hoe into the ground and pull up chunks of dirt. Use the hoe to loosen soil surrounding grass and weeds. Run a bow rake across the cultivated area to remove large weeds and clumps of grass. Pull the remaining weeds and grass by hand. Clear the entire area of weeds and grass.

    • 2

Level the area with a bow rake. Push and pull the soil across the area by dragging a bow rake across the surface. Spread mounds and large chunks of soil evenly across the ground's surface.

    • 3

Grab the loose end of a roll of weed block fabric. Place the loose end of the roll on the ground and unroll the weed block across the area to be covered. Begin at an end or corner of the area, not in the middle. When you reach the end of the area, cut the laid fabric from the roll with a utility knife.

    • 4

Place a second layer of weed block over the first, overlapping it atop by 2 to 3 inches. As you unroll the second layer, secure it to the first layer by pressing garden stakes through the overlapping portion of the layers. Ensure that the stakes pokes through both layers of weed block.

    • 5

Lay successive layers of weed block, overlapping and securing each one with stakes, until the entire area is covered.

    • 6

Cut access holes for plants. Use a utility knife to cut access holes for plants--cut an “X” through the weed block, fold up the flaps of fabric, dig and plant as usual.

    • 7

Cover the weed block with a 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch, bark chips or stones.
