How to Split Flagstone

Flagstones are rocks that come in several sizes and are used to construct patios, walkways and roofs. These stones are popular because they are more inexpensive and can be cut and carved into several different shapes to create any number of designs, whether they be squared or rounded. To achieve a more perfect edge, flagstones can be split at home without the need for specialized tools or professional assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the piece of flagstone that will be split onto a piece of wood. This will provide a strong surface to cut the stone without the danger of causing damage to any structure below the stone.

    • 2

Draw a line where you wish to cut the stone with a permanent marker. Make the line jagged to preserve the naturally raw characteristics of the stone.

    • 3

Score the line approximately 1/8 inch deep with a chisel and a small hammer. This will provide you with the size required for the job.

    • 4

Place the edge of the chisel and split the flagstone with a single hard blow from a sledgehammer.
