How to Use Pavers for My Outdoor Sitting Area

Using pavers for an outdoor sitting area is one way to expand your living space. If it's connected to your house, you can access the sitting area without walking through mud or over grass. Pavers come in many colors and designs. The pattern you use is limited only by your imagination. Choose pavers that complement the design of your house for a cohesive look.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area you want for the sitting area, then dig out the dirt. Use a laser level to ensure the dug-out area is level. If necessary, use sand to help level the area.

    • 2

Place landscaping cloth atop the dirt to cover the area. This prevents weeds and grass from growing between the pavers.

    • 3

Lay the pavers on the seating area in the pattern you desire. If you're not using edging stones, use wood as a frame for the patio and remove it when you're done. This helps keep pavers in place. If necessary, use a utility knife to cut away any excess landscaping cloth.

Use a broom to sweep sand in between the pavers and mist lightly with water. Let dry. Repeat until the sand is level with the top of the pavers. Do this annually or whenever the level of the sand is lower. This helps increase the stability of your patio and also prevents weeds from growing between the pavers.
