Decide if you want to create a pattern using different-colored stones or simply by laying them in different directions. A few rows of different-colored stones in a circle or other design can make a big difference in the look of your patio. When laying a pattern, such as herringbone, start it accurately and make sure you like the look. The stones you lay for the entire area will depend on the first few being done correctly.
Purchase extra of each color of stone so you don't run out. You can sometimes return unused stones to where you purchased them, but it's better to keep them. If any stones break later on, you will have replacements that will match perfectly.
Follow a diagram of the pattern while you lay the stones. If you are working with other people, make sure they all understand the pattern or know how many rows of each color stone to use.
