How to Fix a Sunken Cement Patio

Fixing a sunken cement patio can be done, but this requires knowledge of exactly what to do. There are three main ways to repair a sinking patio. The first works best when the edge of the patio is sinking. The second method is used on less severe sunken patios that are not cracked and are not sinking on the edge of the patio. The final method is best used on severely sunken patios and involves the pumping of cement underneath the patio block.

Instructions

  1. Raising a Corner or Edge

    • 1

Place the pry bar underneath the edge of the patio. Gently raise the edge of the patio.

    • 2

Shovel sand underneath the patio. Add more sand than you need to allow for settling.

    • 3

Tamp the area that you lifted with the rubber mallet to help settle the sand. Add more sand underneath it if it is still not level.

    Leveling a Sunken Middle

    • 4

Mix cement in a 5-gallon bucket with the trowel.

    • 5

Add the cement to the area where the patio has sunk.

    • 6

Spread the cement out with the trowel until it is level with the existing cement. Check if it matches by using a level.

    Raising the Patio with Cement

    • 7

Locate the exact area that is sunk by using a level to determine where the cement is level and where it is not level. Mark the spots where it is level with a marker. Define the edge or the shape.

    • 8

Locate the center of this area; it does not have to be perfect measurement. Make a triangle of dots around this center part about your foot starting from the center mark.

    • 9

Drill through the cement until you reach dirt with the impact drill and the 2-inch drill bit until you hit dirt.

    • 10

Mix the cement in a wheel barrow. Place the hose from the cement pump into the cement.

    • 11

Place the other hose from the cement pump into one of the holes you have drilled. Turn on the pump and begin filling underneath the cement. You will see the cement patio rise. Turn off the pump and switch to another hole. Run the pump just long enough to keep pushing up each of the sections a little bit. This will keep it equal. Make sure to shut off the pump whenever you switch to another hole. Continue this process until the patio is level.
