Look at the area where you are installing the pavers and determine if you want to install them in a straight line or in a curved pattern. If a curved pattern is desired, lay a piece of string on the ground and arrange it until you have the desired effect. Spray alongside the string with spray chalk to mark the outline.
Dig a trench in the location of the chalk line that is 3 inches wider than the width of the pavers and as deep as 1/2 to 3/4 the height of the pavers. Make the bottom of the trench as smooth and even as possible, by placing a level into it and digging out additional soil until the air bubble in the level is centered.
Install a 1-inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the trench and spread it out evenly. The gravel will prevent the pavers from rising upward when the ground freezes.
Fill a wheel barrow with one bag of quick-set concrete and the amount of water directed on the package. Mix the concrete up with the shovel until there are no dry spots. Shovel it into the trench until it is 2 inches high.
Set the first paver into one end of the trench and tap it down with a rubber mallet until it is at the desired height.
Place the next paver beside the first, sliding the edges as close together as possible. Tap it with the hammer until it is the same height as the first one and use the level to ensure that the tops of both pavers are even.
Continue installing pavers in this manner until you reach the end of the trench.
Place concrete into the back of the trench behind the pavers until it is 2 to 3 inches high. Smooth the concrete down and wait for it to dry.
