Step out into your backyard to notice the shape and size. Determine the location of any existing hardscaping so you try to work around those. Decide whether you want to convert the entire space into a patio or a portion of it. Note the amount of sunlight your backyard receives by stepping out at different times of day. Consider what view you want the patio to have. For instance, a patio facing a meadow, pond or valley increases aesthetic pleasure.
Sketch a diagram of your backyard on graph paper so you design the patio accordingly. Include existing features such as paths or buildings so you work around those. Design the shape of your patio based on personal preference and available space. You can make an angular patio or one with rounded edges for a soft appearance. Ideally, the patio should be large enough to provide room for three or four closely placed chairs and a garden table. If you want to entertain on your patio, consider making it at least 500 square feet.
Decide the material for the patio, such as brick, concrete, slate, flagstone or tile. Mix different materials to create aesthetic patio flooring or simply use one type. You can also use lighter tile insider and a bolder color for the border.
Mark the location of planting beds or planters on the graph paper that you can incorporate in your patio. Plant dwarf trees and seasonal flowers in the beds to provide cool, natural shade from unfiltered sunlight along with natural depth and fragrance.
Create a walkway in your patio that leads from one point to another or join it to the front of the house. A curved walkway gives a soft and whimsical touch to the patio that enhances its appearance. Draw a lamppost or two to illuminate the pathway.
Include decorative accents such as a small pond or fountain in your patio design. A 2- or 3-foot-deep pond near the edge of the patio provides a safe place for koi and goldfish. Alternatively, consider placing a small fountain in the center of a corner of your patio to brighten up the atmosphere. Also include the location of garden furniture, an umbrella nearby to shade the seating area and a fire pit.
