Pool Coping Installation

Draw the pool dimensions on paper and create a design for the coping. Use the design to determine a rough estimate of how much coping you will need and the installation shapes involved. Purchase the coping and place it around the pool edges to see how it roughly fits. Number each piece and mark it on your plan so you know where it goes.

Check that the pool edge surface is level by using a long level tool (at least 3 feet long). Identify which pieces need to be adjusted or cut to fit properly around the curves of the pool. Begin cutting the modified pieces so that they are ready to install as you work your way around. Use a diamond cutting tile blade on a tile cutting machine or wet saw to shape the pieces.

Prepare and mix the mortar that will adhere the coping to the pool edge. Use a bucket, water, and mixer drill tool on a drill end to prepare the mortar quickly. Use only the amount of mortar needed for the immediate application (it dries quickly). Lay the individual coping tile onto the mortar and press it down.

Place tile expansion spacers between the coping tiles. Fill the spaces between the coping tiles with either a sealant or mortar, so that there is sufficient give between the tiles. Clean up after the application.
