Italian cypress trees have a pencil like, narrow, slender form with a mature height of up to 80 feet and a 8-foot spread. The dark green foliage is needle-like and keeps its color through the year. When grown in areas with cooler climates, the trees produce cones.
It is not recommended to prune Italian cypress trees as cutting the pointed topmost portion of the tree damages tree vigor and health, as indicated by Nick Federoff in Basic Elements of Pruning (2006). Cutting the tree to a shorter height reduces the tree's ability to grow a strong trunk and branches. (Reference 3)
The tree thrives with minimal attention and grows best in well-drained, fertile ground and areas of full sun. Italian cypress is hardy in USDA Zones 8 to 10. Established tree requires average to dry growing conditions. You can propagate the tree with seed.
