Sweep the slate area you wish to seal. Ensure the area is clean, dry and free of particles. Tape surrounding baseboards, and cover nearby areas to avoid over-spray, drips and spills.
Apply stone sealer evenly across the slate with a paint brush, roller or low-pressure sprayer. Use a liberal amount, but be sure to apply as evenly as possible. Reapply sealer in any spots that soaked in more rapidly than others. Since different areas in the stone may be more porous than others, you may have to apply much more in some areas to achieve a consistent appearance.
Allow sealer to set for 15 to 30 minutes. If residue has appeared while drying, wipe the entire surface with a towel soaked in sealer. Loosen residue with an abrasive nylon brush, and remove scattered residue and excess sealer with a clean, white towel.
Sweep and remove all particles from the slate. Mix an all-purpose stone and tile cleaner with warm water per the manufacturer's recommendations.
Apply cleaner by hand with a sponge or mop, or with a scrubbing machine. Wipe or rinse off with clear water. This type of cleaning can be done whenever the slate is looking dingy, stained or dull in color.
Reapply stone sealer every five to ten years, depending on the condition of the slate and the rate of wear and tear it receives.
