Vinyl Vs. Powder Coated Aluminum Deck Railings

Two common types of railing used for decks are vinyl railing and powder-coated aluminum railings. Each type of railing is designed to complement the deck placed on it, and each has its own special traits, benefits and advantages.
  1. Vinyl

    • Vinyl deck railing is a common choice for homeowners. It is very lightweight, but offers extreme durability and stability. Many people choose vinyl deck railing because there are numerous color and design options available. Vinyl deck railing holds up against natural elements better than aluminum deck railings, and is generally made from PVC, or polymer polyvinyl chloride. It is not affected by rain or heat and all products made from PVC are environmentally safe.

    Aluminum

    • Powder-coated aluminum deck railing is also a popular choice. It is much stronger than vinyl; however, it does not hold up as well against the outdoor elements. After time, aluminum deck railings begin to corrode and rust, although the powder coating helps prevent this. The powder used on aluminum deck rails is made up of finely ground particles of resin and pigment. This mixture is sprayed onto the aluminum railings, then heated to about 400 degrees, which seals the metal.

    Cost

    • Vinyl is less expensive compared to powder-coated aluminum deck railings. It is mass produced, light weight and easy to handle. For example, in 2011, USA Vinyl Fence Company sold a 3-foot-by-6-foot section of vinyl deck railing for $72, whereas Fence Material sold a similarly size powder-coated aluminum deck railing section for $149.

    Other Details

    • Vinyl deck railings are slip-resistant and do not splinter. They also do not accumulate heat. On hot days, people can touch the railings and avoid being burned. Another benefit of vinyl deck railings is that they are ultraviolet-light resistant, which cause them not to fade. Powder-coated aluminum deck railings offer benefits, as well. The powder-coating finish is applied to make the aluminum more durable, weather resistant and to retain its color. Vinyl, however, is easier to install than aluminum railings.
