Instructions

  1. In-Ground Planting

    • 1

Measure the patio to determine how many plants are needed. Decide whether you want to plant all along the patio's perimeter or only at the patio's corners. Your decision will affect the measurements and the number of plants needed.

    • 2

Note which portions of the patio are in shade, full sun or partial sun. Use a soil sample test kit to determine what type of soil is around the patio as well as the soil's pH level. Select plants that will do well in the patio's lighting and soil conditions.

    • 3

Dig a trench 4 inches deep along the patio's edge. Space the plants evenly and according to their growing instructions in the trench. Back-fill the trench with soil, and tamp the soil lightly. Add a 1-inch layer of mulch around the plants to help prevent weeds. Water the plants thoroughly.

    Container Landscaping

    • 4

Place plants in containers that feature various textures and color but uniform height. Use a tall plant as the focal point of each container, and include plants that spill over the container along with medium-sized plants as filler.

    • 5

Place the containers in corners of the patio for interest and color.

    • 6

Change the container plants seasonally for color throughout the year.
