Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to build your brick pavement, such as a walkway or patio. Lay down a piece of rope to mark the outline of the future pavement. Hammer wooden stakes along the outline to mark off the project area.

    • 2

Clear out the project area with a shovel, forming edges along the pavement outline. Dig a clearing that is approximately 8 inches deep and level the remaining soil.

    • 3

Install a 4-inch layer of gravel along the floor of the cleared area. Tamp and level the gravel.

    • 4

Create a wooden edge for the project area. Fasten wooden strapping to the vertical stakes along the project perimeter. Attach with wood screws.

    • 5

Install a 1-1/2-inch layer of sand on top of the gravel layer. Tamp and level the sand.

    • 6

Lay the bricks over the sand in the desired pattern and tamp each one with a rubber mallet as you install them.

    • 7

Spread a layer of stone dust over the brick pavement, allowing the dust to enter all the cracks and crevices. Spray water over the entire project with garden hose and allow the sand and brick to settle. Wait approximately one week to remove the wooden stakes.
