How to Lay Gravel & Pavers

One attractive way to improve the outdoor living area of your home is to hardscape patios, paths and sitting areas with gravel and pavers. The combination of these two materials will let you develop areas with contrasts in color, texture, shape and size. Laying gravel and pavers isn't technically difficult, but it will involve some heavy work in digging, preparing the area, laying pavers and spreading gravel.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the edges of your installation area with marking paint.

    • 2

Dig out the area to a depth of 4 inches with a shovel, loading the dirt into a wheelbarrow as you proceed. This will make cleanup easier.

    • 3

Cut and lay strips of landscape cloth on the bottom of the excavated area. Overlap separate pieces by 2 to 3 inches to prevent erosion and weed growth.

    • 4

Line the edge of the excavated area with edging pavers or bricks. Place the edgers on the landscape cloth to hold it in position.

    • 5

Place the pavers in place in the excavated area. Fill around the pavers with gravel to complete the job.
