How to Add Flower Beds to a Concrete Patio

Landscaping around a concrete patio transforms a cold space into a warm and inviting one. Flowerbeds can emphasize the form of the patio or soften the edges, and they bring splashes of color and a sense of occasion to the environment. They also allow the complex attributes of the flowers to be appreciated at close range from the patio. Lay the beds out in a manner that complements the design character of the patio and choose species that are compatible with the surrounding landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Place flowerbeds at prominent locations such as entrance steps or enclose the patio with beds. Size the bed appropriately to the patio but allow a minimum of 3 feet for flowers.

    • 2

Slope soil away from the patio. Add landscape edging between the patio and the bed as well as between the lawn and the bed.

    • 3

Choose flowers within a limited color palette and vary the heights and textures. Include scented flowers in the beds. Plant at a distance from the patio to protect the flowers from foot traffic.

    • 4

Water carefully so that soil isn't splashed on the patio. Maintain the beds regularly to encourage showy displays.
