How to Lay a Pebble Patio

Patios make an ideal place to entertain family and friends in your outdoor space. You can make a natural and decorative patio that complements your natural surroundings using pebbles. A pebble patio drains well and is easy to maintain. Because pebbles come in a wide variety of textures and colors, you can achieve a patio style that will work well with the rest of your home’s exterior. Pebble patios lend themselves to interesting shapes as the pebbles will fill any dug-out space that you create for them.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a space in your yard to locate the patio and lay out a rope to form the outline of the patio. You can make a round, oval, square or any other shape you choose.

    • 2

Dig out the space inside the rope to a depth of 8 inches using a shovel. Fill the dug-out space with 2 inches of sand.

    • 3

Place landscape edger blocks end to end around the edge of the dug-out space. The bottom should rest flat on layer of sand.

    • 4

Fill in the remaining depth of the space with pebbles. Rake over the surface with a bow rake to level out the pebbles.

    • 5

Pack down the surface of the pebbles using a tamper. Strike the surface of the pebbles in an even up and down motion until you have packed down the entire patio surface.
