How to Install a Seat Wall for a Patio

Patios are ideal spaces for entertaining family and friends. However, patio space can be limited, and patio chairs can take up valuable space on the patio. Instead of adding more seats to an already cluttered space, you can install a seat wall along one side of the patio. The seat wall will provide an attractive border to the patio that doubles as an extra seating space. Select landscaping pavers that accent the patio surface to really punch up the style of the seat wall.

Things You'll Need

  • Landscaping spray paint
  • Shovel
  • Gravel
  • Tamper
  • Landscaping paver blocks
  • Landscape block, stone and timber adhesive tube

  • Flagstone slabs, 1-inch thick

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the outline for the paver seat wall using landscaping spray paint on the side of the patio where you would like to install the seat wall. Make it two landscaping paver blocks wide.

    • 2

Dig out the inside of the spray-painted outline for the seat wall to a depth of 8 inches, using a shovel.

    • 3

Fill in the dug out outline to a depth of 6 inches using gravel. Tamp down the gravel with a tamper by striking it evenly in an up-and-down motion. This is the foundation for the seat wall.

    • 4

Lay the first layer of landscaping paver blocks side-by-side, end-to-end along the entire gravel foundation. The first layer will rest 2 inches below the ground level, which will hold it in place.

    • 5

Apply a zigzag bead of landscape block, stone and timber adhesive over the top surface of each block in the first layer using a caulk gun equipped with a tube of the adhesive.

    • 6

Lay a second layer of block. Stagger the joints between layers to make the wall more secure. Press each block firmly into place over the first layer to ensure a solid bond. Repeat the process of Step 2 to add a bead of adhesive between each layer of block. Continue building up the wall until you reach a height of approximately 16 inches.

    • 7

Apply a final bead of adhesive over the top layer of block using the same technique you used in Step 2. Lay flagstone slabs end-to-end across the top layer of block. Center the flagstone so that an even amount of stone overlaps each side of the seat wall. This will provide you an attractive seating surface on top of the wall.
