How to Hide an Aluminum Overhang on a Patio

If you like to spend a lot of time outside, a patio provides an ideal space. If you leave a patio uncovered, though, the time that you can spend outside is more limited than if the patio had an aluminum overhang, which provides long lasting waterproof coverage. Though an aluminum patio overhang shades the patio from bright sunlight and makes it possible to use your patio in the rain, it may not provide the look you desire. In this case, you may choose to hide the overhang.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the aluminum overhang with a garden hose to remove any dirt and dust accumulated on the surface. If dirt clings to the overhang with water alone, use a cleaning brush to break the dirt free. Allow the overhang to air dry if it’s a sunny day or use a towel to dry.

Paint an aluminum overhang on a patio if you dislike the color of the aluminum but don’t mind the appearance of the metal. Apply metal primer to the clean aluminum surface first, starting at the edges of the overhang with a paintbrush to get all the corners and outer perimeter primed, then apply an even coat of primer to the remainder of the overhang with a paint roller. Paint the overhang the same way — outer edges and corners first, then the remainder of the overhang surface.

Cover the overhang with outdoor vinyl fabric or an outdoor awning large enough to cover the entire overhang. Place metal clips on the wall of the house just above the top edge of the overhang or directly on top, every 5 to 6 inches. Attach the fabric or awning to the clips so it drapes down over the overhang. Hold the fabric in place at the bottom of the overhang with more metal clips.

Paint or use vinyl fabric to cover the poles that support the overhang, if you find those unsightly as well. Use latex paint to cover metal poles or attach the fabric to the bottom of the overhang with clips, wrap the fabric around the pole and tie the fabric in place with an additional strip of vinyl fabric to create a curtain-like design.
