How to Enclose a Patio Using Screen Frames

Reclaimed wooden screen frames are good building materials for encloses a patio. Enclosing the patio’s sides with these frames creates a defined space with an interesting design element. Reclaimed screens’ character adds eclectic appeal to the installation. In addition to creating an interesting installation, it also helps keep the patio space bug free. An 8-by-8-foot patio space is typical, but you can modify the dimensions as needed.

  • 9 reclaimed wooden screen frames, 48-by-96 inches
  • 8 metal corner brackets with screws
  • 6 metal braces with screws
  • Screw gun
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • Velcro screen door kit

      Stand two screen frames upright. Position the frames perpendicular to each other forming a 90-degree corner assembly. Align a corner bracket 6 inches from the top and bottom ends on the corner joint’s inside. Drive the screws that were included with the corner brackets through the mounting holes into the screen frames using a screw gun. Repeat this process with two more screen pairs.

      Position the three screen frame corner assemblies in three corners of the patio. The assemblies join in the center of the patio’s sides. Align a metal brace between the joints on the screen frames’ interior sides 6 inches from the top and bottom ends. Drive the screws that were included with the braces through the mounting holes in the braces into the screen frames. The braces fasten the assemblies together.

      Place one screen next to one corner assembly completing the one side of the unenclosed corner of the screen enclosure. The remaining opening is for the doorway. Align the braces between the adjoining edges as before and fasten them in place.

      Lay the remaining two screen frames flat over the assembly’s top forming a roof enclosure. Drive 2-inch wood screws with a screw gun through the screen frames tops into the top ends of the screen frames forming the enclosure every 4 to 6.

      Center the Velcro screen door kit over the screen assembly’s opening. Remove the strip’s backing and press it firmly against the screen frames surrounding the doorway opening. Lift the screen open and closed as needed to enter and exit the patio space.
