How to Get Rid of Grass Growing Under a Porch

Grass frequently will grow in inconvenient places. Grass requires sunlight, moisture and nutrients to grow, and it can spring up in gardens and in hard-to-reach places such as under porches. While a little bit of grass under a porch is unlikely to be noticed, it can quickly spread until it is an eyesore. Getting rid of grass under a porch can be done quickly with the appropriate materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull small grass sprigs out of the ground, grasping them by the base. Be sure to get the root to prevent regrowth.

    • 2

Lay down six layers of newspaper over any larger areas of grass under the porch. Weigh down the newspaper with a spray of water.

    • 3

Place rocks over the newspaper to help hold it in place.

    • 4

Cover the newspaper with 4 to 6 inches of mulch. The newspaper helps block sunlight, and the grass will die since it can't complete its photosynthetic processes.

    • 5

Pour undiluted white vinegar over grass that continues to grow. The acidity in the vinegar will kill off the grass while not being toxic to pets.
