Which Planting Zone Is East Texas In?

The eastern half of Texas falls within three separate U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones. These zones help determine which plants will survive in a specific area, categorized by the lowest winter temperatures you can expect to see.
  1. USDA Zones

    • The northern portion of east Texas is within USDA zone 7, with most of this region in zone 7b. Central and southern parts of east Texas are within USDA zone 8, while the extreme southern region, along the Gulf Coast, is in USDA zones 9a and 9b.

    Temperatures

    • Minimum temperatures in the winter in USDA zone 7b range from between 5 and 10 degrees F. The low temperatures in USDA zone 8 are somewhat warmer -- between 10 and 20 degrees F. Along the coast, in USDA zone 9, the chilliest weather brings temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees F.

    Geography

    • Austin, Texas, is within USDA zone 8b, while Dallas, a bit to the north, is in USDA zone 8a, according to the U.S. National Arboretum. Other major cities in the eastern half of Texas include Houston, in USDA zone 9a, and Brownsville, found in USDA zone 9b.
