Parts You Need for Sprinkler Irrigation Systems

Sprinkler systems require three components: control valves, supply pipes and sprinkler heads. Among these three components, sprinkler system parts vary according to cost, installation procedures and automation features. Choose sprinkler parts according to the budget and watering requirement of your irrigation project.
  1. Control Valves

    • There are two types of sprinkler control valves: manual and automatic. Like an indoor faucet, manual valves must be turned on by a handle. Electronic sprinkler timers control the functions of automatic valves. Automatic valves generally cost more than manual valves.

    Supply Pipes

    • The two most common types of sprinkler supply pipes are polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes and polyethylene drip tubes. Whereas PVC pipes generally rest below the earth, drip tubes may rest on the ground's surface. Both types of pipes connect to the control valve and deliver water to individual sprinkler heads.

    Sprinkler Heads

    • Sprinkler heads receive water from supply pipes and distribute the water across lawns, gardens and orchards. Sprinkler heads vary according to the range and volume of their spray.
