How to Apply Landscape Stone Over Wood Mulch

Landscape stone is popular in some areas of the country because of its natural appearance and low maintenance. Natural stone such as crushed limestone, river rock or scoria lava rock are common choices for residential homes. Rock mulch is beneficial to your landscaped areas because it does not move easily in the wind, controls weeds more than organic mulch, and does not deplete the soil of nitrogen that is necessary for successful plant growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake the wood mulch so that it is an even thickness over the landscape bed.

    • 2

Spread the landscape fabric over the wood mulch. Secure the edges with pins. To place the fabric over an existing plant, cut an X into the fabric with a knife and open the flaps to place it around the plant. Take care not to damage the plants as you place the fabric.

    • 3

Shovel the rock mulch onto the landscape fabric. Spread the rocks until you achieve an even thickness of at least 3 inches.

    • 4

Install landscape edging to the beds to keep the rock mulch from rolling into the grass. If rock mulch spreads onto the adjacent grass areas, it can damage lawn care equipment.
