Select an appropriate place to grow your seeds. Keep in mind that different species of plants are going to need different levels of light, different kinds of soil and different amounts of water. As a general guideline, however, you'll want rich soil--potting soil from a gardening store is best--and an area that receives a lot of sunlight. If you're growing indoors, you'll need an area where you can direct an artificial light on the seeds for most of the day.
Prepare the soil. It needs to be well-drained and stirred up with a tiller about 12 inches deep if you're growing outdoors. If you're growing indoors, don't pack down the potting soil in the pot.
Rake the soil gently over the top and add a 2- to 4-inch layer of Miracle Gro. An alternative product you can use is compost, which is a mixture of decaying organic products that enrich your soil. You can buy compost at any gardening store, or you can make your own.
Wet the soil thoroughly and plant your seeds. This is where the species of seeds really comes into play because plants are very sensitive to being over-watered. At first, water the soil lightly every day just enough that the water can soak down to the seeds. Re-apply a light layer of Miracle Gro or compost on top as needed.
Keep the seeds in direct light up to 12 hours a day while they grow. When growing indoors, make sure to turn the light off at night to mimic the patterns of natural sunlight.
