Both quarried and cut, natural stones can be placed on the ground to form pavement for walkways, patios and driveways to serve utilitarian purposes and decorate the landscape with texture. Stone and rock should be of uniform thickness and installed temporarily with sand or permanently with mortar to fill the gaps between stones.
Dry-stacked or mortared together, both large stones and small rocks can be laid to create rustic stone walls, fences and raised garden beds. These walls and fences may be installed to align a driveway, path or retain a raised area of a yard and prevent soil erosion while adding character to the landscape.
Rock and stone can be used to enhance the looks of a flower garden. Arranged at the edge of garden beds, a row of stone or rock creates a protective barrier to keep mulches from spilling into yards and prevent lawn equipment from damaging flowers and ornamental plants. Large boulders can be used as focal points or container garden stands for added decor in the landscape.
