You can choose among several varieties of fescue, of which tall fescue and fine fescue are the most common. Both are cool-season perennial grasses that can form year-round lawns in cool to moderate climates, and work well as a temporary winter lawn in southern areas.
Fescues work best when planted in early fall, between August 15 and the end of September in most areas. If you live in a cooler climate, you can start planting at the beginning of this time frame, but southern growers would be advised to wait until mid- to late-September.
Spring planting of fescue is an option in some parts of the country, particularly in cooler areas -- plant in spring at higher elevations. But fescue grass can suffer summer injury from spring planting in areas with hot, dry summers.
