The Best Time to Sow Fescue Seed

Fescues are among the turf grasses most frequently planted by landscapers and homeowners. Able to thrive in all but the hottest parts of the United States, fescues have the best chances of forming a healthy, long-lasting lawn if you plant them at the right time.
  1. Types

    • You can choose among several varieties of fescue, of which tall fescue and fine fescue are the most common. Both are cool-season perennial grasses that can form year-round lawns in cool to moderate climates, and work well as a temporary winter lawn in southern areas.

    Time Frame

    • Fescues work best when planted in early fall, between August 15 and the end of September in most areas. If you live in a cooler climate, you can start planting at the beginning of this time frame, but southern growers would be advised to wait until mid- to late-September.

    Considerations

    • Spring planting of fescue is an option in some parts of the country, particularly in cooler areas -- plant in spring at higher elevations. But fescue grass can suffer summer injury from spring planting in areas with hot, dry summers.
