How to Trim Around a Sprinkler

Pop-up lawn sprinklers allow you to mow right over the grass without needing to trim around the sprinkler head, while others require you to carefully move around them. Either way, you'll need to trim the edges of the lawn around the sprinklers or cut small round holes in the lawn around the sprinkler to limit grass growth, although this makes your lawn look more like a golf course. Since traditional line trimmers frequently damage sprinklers, it is best to cut the grass away by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the sprinkler system off, or ensure that it isn't set to turn on while you are trimming the area.

    • 2

Get down onto your knees to get as close to the sprinkler as possible. Move around the sprinkler with your shears, cutting as close to the sprinkler as you can. Cut the grass only when the grass is dry. Wet grass is more difficult to cut and may cause your equipment to rust.

    • 3

Brush away excess grass blades from the sprinkler head with a mini broom, and ensure that the sprinkler head is pointed in the correct direction.

    • 4

Inspect the sprinklers for any damage and leaks.

    • 5

Use an edger, which is a pipe with a sharp metal edge, for sprinklers near concrete or sidewalk.
