How Much Is One Yard of Topsoil?

Rich in organic matter and nutrients, topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil in which plants grow. Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard, often abbreviated to "yard." The weight varies according to the soil density.
  1. Volume

    • When builders refer to a "yard of topsoil," they mean 1 cubic yard of soil. This is the equivalent of 27 cubic feet, and forms a cube with sides 3 feet long. Builders may also refer to it as two scoops of soil.

    Weight

    • The weight of topsoil depends on the water content, and whether the soil is compact or loose. According to the Department of Ecology, State of Washington, an average cubic yard of topsoil weighs 2,700 pounds.

    Cost

    • The cost of topsoil varies according to location. In general, topsoil costs more in cities than in rural areas, and topsoil that is not sourced locally incurs additional transportation costs. Costs are lower if you collect the soil in your own vehicle and avoid delivery charges. Additional charges exist for sieving the soil to remove large stones before delivery. Dirt is sometimes available free from sources such as construction sites.
