Fast-Growing Grass

Homeowners are often looking for a fast-growing grass to place in their yard. You can choose from several types of grasses that are fast growing, tolerant of shade and provide coverage throughout the winter months as well as the summer.
  1. Ryegrass

    • Ryegrass is commonly used in overseeding lawns during the late fall and winter months. Ryegrass is a cool-season grass, which provides a lush green lawn in cold weather conditions. The three main types of ryegrass are annual, intermediate and improved/perennial. All three are characterized by fast growth, tolerance to sun or shade, adaptability and the rapid rate in which the seed germinates. Ryegrass is commonly chosen by homeowners who wish to have a green lawn year-round.

    Bahia Grass

    • Bahia grass is a relatively fast-growing grass that was introduced from Brazil. This grass develops an extensive root system, making it tolerant to drought conditions and a good choice for sandy soil. Bahia grass is grown from seed or is established by sod, has few insect problems and is resistant to many turf grass diseases. Since this is a fast-growing grass, Bahia grass requires mowing on a regular schedule. This grass has many varieties, including Argentine, common, Paraguay and Pensacola.

    St. Augustine Grass

    • St. Augustine grass is the most commonly used lawn grass in Florida, according to the University of Florida. This grass has adapted well to warm, humid areas and is easy to grow in a variety of soil types. Floratam is the most commonly used St. Augustine grass that grows quickly during periods of warm weather. However, it is not tolerant to cold or shade and is susceptible to gray leaf spot and chinch bug infestations.

    Wheat Grass

    • Intermediate wheat grass is a fast-growing grass that forms sod rapidly. This cool-season grass is tolerant to drought and is often used for grazing grass. Because it is a fast-growing grass, intermediate wheat grass is often placed in seed mixtures for hay and for wildlife habitats. Some varieties of intermediate wheat grass includes Manska, Chief, Oahe and Reliant, all of which are high-producing, fast-growing grasses.
