Homemade Sand Filter for a Pond

Pond filters available at local home and gardening stores include a hose and plastic filter that contains sand and other materials. Installing a filter is necessary for removing moss, sludge, algae and other organic material from your pond. You can save money by building your own pond sand filter using buckets, a water pump, PVC bulkhead hose and other filter items that will help to keep your pond water clean.

  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • 2 buckets, 5-gallon
  • PVC bulkhead hose
  • Aquarium glue
  • Cotton bag
  • Sand
  • Small pebbles
  • Aquarium gravel
  • Pond filter media
  • Water pump

Instructions

      Use measuring tape to measure the drop of your pond where you want to place the homemade filter.

      Drill a hole in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket that will fit a PVC bulkhead hosepipe connector.

      Use aquarium glue to connect the hosepipe to the bottom of the bucket, and allow at least 24 hours for the glue to dry.

      Place a cotton bag in a second 5-gallon bucket, and then add at least 5 inches of clean sand into the bucket.

      Tie the bag and then drill several small holes that are at least 2 inches apart into the bottom of the second bucket.

      Add a couple layers of small pebbles and a 1-inch layer of aquarium gravel over the bag of sand in the second bucket. Fill the rest of the bucket with pond filter media.

      Place the second bucket into the first bucket that connects to the hosepipe. Connect the other end of the PVC hosepipe to a water pump and start the pump after place your filter in the pond.
