Concrete is typically sold by the cubic yard and cubic yardage is calculated by multiplying the length by the width by the depth of the space you want to fill with the concrete. Therefore, to determine how many yards of concrete to use, you need to measure the volume of the space you want to fill with the concrete.

  Determine the length of the space you want to fill with concrete in feet. For example, assume the length of the space is 15 feet.

  Determine the width of the space you want to fill with concrete in feet. For example, assume the width of the space is 8 feet.

  Determine the depth of the space you want to fill with concrete in feet. In other words, how thick of a slab of concrete do you want? For example, assume the depth of the space is 0.5 feet.

  Multiply the length figure by the width figure by the depth figure. Continuing the same example, 15 x 8 x 0.5 = 60 square feet. This figure represents the volume of the space you want to fill with concrete.

  Divide the volume figure from Step 4 by 27 to determine the cubic yards of concrete needed. Continuing the same example, 60 / 27 = 2.22 yards of concrete.
