Do-It-Yourself Landscaping Pavers

Installing landscaping pavers around your garden or flower beds provides several advantages. The pavers provide a clean border between your lawn and the bed, form a barrier that keeps your lawn mower out of the bed and can prevent soil from escaping the bed. The pavers are usually made out of concrete, which is durable, and are manufactured in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Place pavers on the grass around the edge of the bed.

    • 2

Drive the blade of an edging shovel into the ground an inch in front of the pavers to create a score line. Remove the pavers.

    • 3

Dig a 6-inch-deep trench between the score line and the edge of the bed, using the shovel. Level the dirt in the trench and tamp it down.

    • 4

Pour a 3-inch-deep layer of crushed stone into the trench. Level the stone and tamp it down.

    • 5

Add more crushed stone to the trench. Level it out and tamp it down. Add enough stone so that half of the paver is in the trench and the other half is above the ground.

    • 6

Set the first paver into the trench and check it for level. Tap it down with a rubber mallet to level it out if necessary.

    • 7

Place the second stone in the trench next to the first stone. Lay the level across both stones, and tap the second stone down with the rubber mallet to even them out if necessary.

    • 8

Continue installing the pavers in the trench using this method. Backfill the gaps between the pavers and the front of the trench with dirt and the shovel.

    • 9

Lay the second course of pavers on top of the first course, staggering them from the first row. Run a thick bead of masonry adhesive in a zig-zag pattern across the top of two pavers in the first row, then set the pavers in the second row so they straddle the pavers in the first row. Cut a paver in half with a wet saw or mason's chisel and hammer and install it on the ends if needed to create the stagger.

Continue installing the pavers until you reach the desired height.
