How to Make Tree Limbs for Vines to Grow Up

Vines have a long trailing growth pattern and lie on the ground unless a vertical support structure is provided for them. Although you can purchase trellises and various metal cages at any garden supply store, you can also make a support structure for the vine using branches from the garden. Making a trellis support out of branches creates a natural, rustic look that blends into the surroundings.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand pruners or loppers
  • 1/4-inch galvanized screws
  • Gardening tape
  • Electric drill and 1/4-inch drill bit (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Walk out into the yard, and locate a tree that has small twigs that are 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter and that are still flexible when you bend them. Cut off nine branches that are 5 feet long and one that is 2 feet long using hand pruners or loppers.

    • 2

Lay five 5-foot-long branches on a flat table so that they are parallel and touching.

    • 3

Cut off a 4-inch-long section of another branch using hand pruners, and lay it perpendicular on top of the other branches so that it is 6 inches from their bottom edges. Insert five 1/2-inch-long galvanized screws into the upper branch so that they penetrate the underlying branches.

    • 4

Cut three more branches at the following lengths using the hand pruners: 8 inches, 10 inches and 12 inches.

    • 5

Place the 8-inch-long branch 12 inches above the 4-inch one. Ask another person to bend the bottom branches out into fan pattern until the two outer branches are at the end of the 8-inch piece. Secure each of the underlying branches to the 8-inch piece using more screws.

    • 6

Place the 10-inch-long branch 12 inches above the 8-inch one and repeat the process to install it. Then repeat the process a final time to install the 12-inch-long piece at the very top of the branches. The structure will look like a fan.

    • 7

Position the support structure at least 3 to 4 inches behind the vine. Push the bottom sections of the support structure at least 6 inches into the pot or ground to secure it firmly.

    • 8

Lift the vine up, and lay it against the support. Cut off a 6-inch piece of gardening tape, and wrap it around the vine loosely before knotting it behind one of the branches. Place at least two to three more pieces of gardening tape on the vine, spacing them at equal distances down the vine.
