How to Use Pine Straw for Landscaping

Pine straw, a brown mulch composed of needles from pine trees, represents an effective and inexpensive organic landscaping mulch. Pine straw reduces water evaporation from the soil, which keeps soil moist. It also insulates soil and plant roots, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In addition, pine straw reduces soil erosion and prevents weed problems. Unlike other mulches, pine straw doesn't wash away from sloped surfaces, and it lets air and water reach the soil. Pine straw needs to be applied about once a year.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you want to use pine straw. Pine straw makes an effective ground cover in areas where grass and plants don't grow well, such as steep slopes and heavily shaded areas. It also looks attractive on plant and flower beds.

Calculate how much pine straw you need. You should create a 3-inch cover of pine straw, which requires about 1/2 lbs. of pine straw per square foot. Pine straw bales come in a range of sizes between 25 and 50 lbs. For example, if you want to cover 400 square feet with pine straw, you could use four 50-lbs. bales.

Scatter the pine straw over the desired area at a depth of approximately 3 inches. If necessary, use a rake to spread the pine straw evenly.
