How to Use Stone Walls for Landscaping

Stone walls are a beautiful addition to landscaping, adding texture, color and a natural style to the area and blending in with the overall setting. There are several ways in which these walls can be used in the yard, many of which have a practical use as well as aesthetic appeal. If you are considering adding any stone walls to your yard, try to think of what the wall can help you accomplish so you don't just build the wall for the sake of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Install rock walls along hills that have an issue with erosion. Use them as retaining walls to keep the soil from washing away. You can then plant vegetation up from the walls to hold the ground firm.

    • 2

Build small stone walls along the borders of landscaping to define it and keep grass from creeping in. Place the first row down a few inches in the ground to keep grass out.

    • 3

Construct walls along a path that has banks on one or both sides. This will help keep water from washing dirt and landscaping mulch onto the path, helping to maintain the path over time. It also gives the garden paths a more private feel.

    • 4

Place rock walls around a section of garden to form a closed-in space. Fill the area with soil to make raised landscaping planters for the garden. Raising up some of the garden makes it feel more private and secluded. Raised gardens work well in areas where the ground soil is poor or doesn't drain well.

Build a wall along the border of the garden or entire yard to make a stone fence. Closing in the garden defines it from the rest of the yard. Closing in the yard gives your property a defined border.
