Creating

• A waterfall garden in your backyard is not a difficult creation and you can make it even easier with a kit waterfall. If your yard is flat, you will need to build up the area for the waterfall. Situating the waterfall in the corner of the yard gives the opportunity to create the effect of a rocky hillside. Waterfalls generally fall into pools, ponds or gravel beds as you then pump the water back to the top of the waterfall.

Pools and Ponds

• Pools and ponds look attractive when planted with water plants. Waterlilies are popular and beautiful pond plants, available in a variety of sizes and colors; including cream, white, pink, yellow and red. You can plant water lilies direct into soil on the base of the pond or into aquatic baskets. Situate a garden bench or seating area close to the pool where you can relax, listening to the sounds of the waterfall splashing.

Rocks and Stones

• Make your garden waterfall appear realistic by siting rocks, stones and slabs in the water channels and overlapping the edges of the water. Stones or rocks in the water channel may alter the water flow to give more movement to the stream. You can also use pebbles to create stone beach areas, ideal for wading birds and other wildlife. Site rocks in the hillside area around the waterfall to give the appearance of a rocky hillside and plant with alpines and rock garden plants.

Patios, Decks and Features

• Highlight your garden waterfall and pool area by adding features such as patios, decking or bridges across the pool or stream. A small wooden footbridge or Japanese pagoda, teahouse or garden structure will add value to the water feature. The water feature should be one of the central points of the garden and easily connect to the rest of the yard.
