What Are the Benefits of Zoysia Grass?

Zoysiagrasses are all varieties of a genus of grass native to China, Japan and Southeast Asia. It was introduced to the United States in 1911. It maintains a well-deserved reputation as an excellent turf grass for most of the Southern United States. If you are considering planting zoysiagrass in your yard, be aware of the many advantages it offers. Understanding the benefits helps you make a good decision.
  1. Wide Range

    • Zoysiagrass does well in many locations. In the United States, zoysiagrass is planted from Connecticut to Florida and from the East Coast to Texas. They are appropriate for the noncoastal regions of California. While the light needs of zoysiagrass vary depending on the temperature, it thrives in all of these locations.

    Highly Drought Tolerant

    • Zoysiagrass is an ideal choice for areas experiencing regular dry conditions and drought. This turfgrass survives well in conditions that kill other grasses. During the beginning of a drought, the zoysiagrasses' leaf blades curl under, preserving the moisture. Although the grass turns to a straw-yellow color, it survives, and then turns green again when the rains return.

    Salt Tolerant

    • Zoysiagrass thrives in areas where the water and land has a high salt content. Unlike other grasses that shrivel in the face of salt, zoysiagrasses may be planted in coastal areas. They grow well along sandy seashores, as long as they have enough drainage.

    Wide Variety

    • There are many varieties of zoysiagrass from which, and three principle species with markedly different attributes. Zoysia japonica has a coarse texture, but is cold tolerant; while Zoysia mattrella has a finer texture but tends to turn brown in the cold. Zoysia tennifolia is fine textured and dense, but is not cold tolerant. Within these three species, there are a number of varieties with a wide array of colors and textures.
