How to Trim a Mugo Pine

Mugo pines are evergreen trees that are commonly found in Europe and Western Asia. The Mugo pine has also found success growing in many parts of the United States when used as part of a landscape. Mugo pine branches have a more compact growth pattern than some other evergreen pines. Successful pruning helps to encourage a dense and compact growth pattern that helps to maintain and accentuate the natural appearance of the tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves to protect your hands while pruning the Mugo pine.

    • 2

Choose a time in the early spring of the year to trim Mugo pines. Avoid trimming or pruning in the fall and winter. Select a time to prune in early spring before the sap in the tree begins to rise.

    • 3

Hold a candle or new elongated growth at the end of the branch with your hand.

    • 4

Place the blades of a bypass pruner around the new candle growth. Position the blade so that the upper 2/3 of the candle will be removed.

    • 5

Clip the candle growth from the branch with a smooth motion to eliminate any tearing. Continue to the next branch and cut the candle growth in the same manner.
