Different Colored Stones

Stones can be used in landscaping, jewelry, decorations and in many crafts and games. Some stones are even used for healing purposes. The best thing about stones is that they come in many sizes, colors and textures. No two stones are alike and even though they may be the same kind of stone, there will always be variations in color and design, making each stone unique and special.
  1. Birthstones

    • Birthstones are colored stones that indicate certain months of the year. In general, these types of stones are called "gemstones" and are mined for their color and brilliance. For whatever month a person is born, there is a colored stone to indicate that month. For example, the stone for September is sapphire. June has two stones, the pearl and the Alexandrite, while April is the month for the diamond, one of the most prized gemstones of all.

    Colored Stones for Landscaping

    • There are many colored stones homeowners can use to enhance their gardens and driveways and for other landscaping needs. The most common types of stones for landscaping are limestone, granite, sandstone, marble and travertine. Each of these stones has a natural color that can accentuate any garden or natural area. Granite, for example, comes in many colors, including black and different shades of red, beige, blue and green.

    Different Colored Stones for Mosaics

    • In the early centuries, around 4 to 5 AD, the Egyptians and Greeks were famous for creating mosaic art with different colored stones, glass and bits of pottery. Mosaics were one of the most common forms of art religous art and were used in the domes of churches and major synagogues and important government buildings. Colored stones such as turquoise, garnet and pebbles were used to make these mosaics. Mosaic art is still popular today.

    • Different colored stones can be used for decorating a fish tank and even bathrooms for a spa-like ambiance. They can also be nice additions for centerpieces atg weddings or parties. For a multicolored stone game, try Mancala, one of the oldest African games using colored stones.
