How to Sharpen a Pole Saw Blade

A pole saw is designed to cut tree limbs that are out of reach of the regular saw. A pole saw consists of a saw blade attached to the end of a pole. The pole acts as an extension so that the blades of the saw can reach the tree limbs. The saw is operated by a series of cables or rope attachments. Over time, the saw blades will become dull. Sharpen the pole saw blades regularly for maximum cutting efficiency.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the pole saw from any electrical source.

    • 2

Place the pole saw on a table and pull the rope back to lock the blades in the open position. Tie the rope around the end of the pole. Position the saw blades inside of the vise so that the blades are about a half-inch above the vise. Close the vise tightly around the blade.

    • 3

Put work gloves on and pick out one of the saw blades to begin the sharpening process.

    • 4

Position the top part of the saw file against the beveled edge of the saw blade at a 45-degree angle. Apply a small amount of pressure to the file with your hand. Push the file against the saw blade until your hand reaches the blade.

    • 5

Pull the file up out of the saw blade. Bring the top part of the file back to the beveled edge of the saw blade. Position the file back to a 45-degree angle toward the blade and repeat the sharpening process. Push the file against the beveled edge of the saw blade in one direction only. Do not drag the saw file back and forth against the saw blade. File the saw blade tooth at least three to five times.

Move to the next saw blade tooth and repeat the same sharpening process as outlined above. Continue to repeat the sharpening process until all of the saw blade teeth have been sharpening.
