How to Mulch and Discharge Grass Clippings

Mulch is not just wood chips, but any material, organic or not, used to cover the ground around plants. Mulching is an easy task to undertake, although, depending on the size of the yard, it can involve a good deal of labor. If you have grass clippings from your lawn mowing, you can use them as mulch.

Instructions

Empty grass clippings from your lawn mower bag in an area you are trying to build up. The grass will break down slowly and add to the nutrients of the landscaping. You can mix the clippings with a little top soil or other mulch such as bark. Once the grass clippings break down into soil, you can plant items there.

Dump grass clippings into a compost bin to add to the composting process. Mix the compost periodically until the clippings break down. Spread the compost over landscaping as mulch to cover the soil.

Let the grass clippings discharge over the yard as you mow. The grass will break down slowly, adding nutrients to the yard. Mow the lawn in a circular pattern, aiming the discharge slot of the mower toward the center. You will mow over the grass clippings on your next pass, cutting them even smaller. If you mow while the grass is wet, you will need to rake the yard to break up the wet clumps so they do not cause the grass under them to die.
